No - I did not use gunzip (gzip) because the file is a tar file
(apache_1_3_9+ssl_1_37_tar.tar). I download the file from each listed on
apache-ssl.org. Perhaps it is not a good day to download :-(.
$ tar xvf apache_1_3_9+ssl_1_37_tar.tar
tar: directory checksum error

I seriously doubt that. Did you remember to decompress it (with gunzip)
before trying to untar it?
